Safety Thoughts

Whether you're 12 inches or 12 feet above the ground, you must take appropriate safety precautions when working at heights.  Here a few pointers to keep in mind:

bullet

Use only approved ladders for working at the height for which they were designed.

bullet

If a harness and lanyard are required, use them!

bullet

Make certain any portable step-ups is stable and able to support the intended weight.

bullet

Don't use makeshift platforms like buckets, boxes or milk crates.

Did you know that highway incidents are the leading cause of occupational deaths?  Nearly one-quarter of on-the-job fatalities involve motor vehicle incidents.   Across the globe each year, 1.2 million people are killed in some type of traffic crash or accident.  Up to 50 million more are injured.  In the U.S. traffic crashes claim 41,000 lives each year and cost our nation $150 billion.

The single best proven way to protect ourselves from becoming a statistic is through the use of seat belts.  If just 1% more Americans used seat belts, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that we would save 250 lives, prevent 4,000 moderate-to-critical injuries and cut crash costs by $800 million.

In our line of work, however, it's not just being in a vehicle where were exposed to highway hazards.  Since many of us spend a good deal of our time working on the road, here are a few more tips for staying safe at our highway worksites:

bullet

Park non-work vehicles well off the roadway.

bullet

Work facing traffic whenever possible.

bullet

Wear safety vests and hard hats at all times.

bullet

Stop work in bad weather and times of poor visibility.

bullet

Stay off rip-rap embankments and steep slopes.

bullet

Review highway safety rules on a regular basis

Always be on the lookout for hazards.  Correct them immediately or speak with your supervisor.  We all play a role in our safety success and your diligence and constant awareness will help ensure an accident and injury free workplace.
